Preventing Frozen Pipes in Winter
Set Thermostat for at Least 50 Degrees Fahrenheit
We recommend setting the thermostat for at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent pipes from freezing. Keep in mind that this is a general recommendation. Depending on the seasonal temperatures for your region, you may want to increase the thermostat to 55 degrees (or more) to prevent frozen pipes. Our commercial plumbers will be able to help you winterize your plumbing and pipes.
Keep Doors Inside Building Open
It’s hard for your building’s heating system to work efficiently when rooms are closed off. For this reason, our commercial plumbers recommend keeping the interior doors open so that heat can travel throughout your building. If some of your pipes are in cabinets, it would be a good idea to keep the cabinet doors open so heat can reach the pipes inside.
Prevent Drafts near Pipes
Feel for drafts near any of the pipes, especially if your commercial building has an attic or basement. If you feel a draft, you’ll need to caulk any cracks that could be letting in the cold air from outside. Keep in mind that cracks and holes on the outside of your commercial building can also let in drafts. It’ll be much easier keeping commercial plumbing warm when it isn’t exposed to cold air seeping in from outside.
Add Insulation around Pipes
Since it’s not uncommon for attics and basements to lack proper insulation, you’ll want to give extra attention to the pipes in these areas. If you are worried about attic or basement pipes freezing, we recommend adding insulation around pipes. You can pick up special sleeves made out of fiberglass or foam rubber at your local home improvement store that fit around pipes. You may also decide to add insulation to walls and ceilings as an added layer of protection.
